Care that begins before the birth
Antenatal care is the scheduled medical care a woman receives throughout pregnancy. It is not a formality — it is how we confirm the pregnancy is progressing well, date it accurately, and identify conditions like anaemia, gestational diabetes, hypertension and HIV early, when they are simplest to manage.
We encourage every pregnant woman to register as early as possible, ideally in the first three months. Early registration gives us the full picture and time to act.
What happens at antenatal visits
Each visit is a chance to check on both mother and baby. A typical visit includes:
- Blood pressure, weight and urine checks
- Blood tests — haemoglobin level, blood group and genotype, malaria screening, and infection screening
- Ultrasound scans to confirm the baby's position, growth and wellbeing
- Tetanus vaccination and preventive malaria treatment as scheduled
- Counselling on nutrition, breastfeeding, birth planning and danger signs
Danger signs that need the hospital immediately
Please come in at once — day or night — if you experience any of the following during pregnancy:
- Bleeding from the birth canal
- Severe headache with blurred vision or swelling of the face and hands
- Convulsions or loss of consciousness
- Waters breaking before labour, or a noticeable drop in the baby's movements
- Severe abdominal pain, fever, or a foul-smelling discharge
