Your Guide to Annual Health Screenings

Most serious illnesses give early clues — but only if you look. A practical, age-by-age guide to the screenings worth doing every year.

A specialist consultation in progress

Why screen when you feel fine?

Hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, hepatitis and many cancers develop silently for years. Screening is how we find them while they are still easy — and far cheaper — to treat. Think of an annual check as servicing your body before a breakdown, not after.

At our diagnostic centre, a comprehensive health check can be completed in a single morning, with results reviewed by a doctor the same day.

Screenings for every adult

Regardless of age, once you are an adult these basics apply:

  • Blood pressure check — every visit, at least once a year
  • Weight, waist circumference and body mass index
  • Fasting blood sugar or HbA1c — yearly from your mid-thirties, or earlier with risk factors
  • Cholesterol profile — yearly from your thirties
  • Kidney and liver function tests — with your annual blood profile
  • Hepatitis B and C screening — at least once, then as advised

For men

From age 40 — or 45 if there is a family history — discuss prostate screening with your doctor, which includes a prostate-specific antigen (PSA) blood test and examination. Men who smoke should also discuss lung health, and any urinary changes, erectile difficulties or blood in urine deserve prompt review rather than embarrassment.

For women

Women's screening needs change across life stages:

  • Cervical cancer screening (Pap smear or HPV test) from age 21, or within three years of first intimacy, repeated as advised
  • Breast awareness and yearly clinical breast examination from age 20; mammography from age 40, or earlier with a strong family history
  • Bone health review after menopause
  • Antenatal and postnatal check-ups for every pregnancy

Make it a habit

Pick a memorable date — your birthday month works well — and book your annual check every year. Bring a list of any symptoms you have noticed and the medications or supplements you take.

Our laboratory runs a full screening profile with same-day results for most tests, and our doctors will walk you through every finding and next step. Prevention really is the best investment you can make in yourself.
